I first read Batman: The Killing Joke when it was published back in 1988. To put it mildly, the comic (written by Alan Moore, drawn by Brian Bolland) sent shockwaves through the entire comic book industry with its ruthless depiction of the Clown Prince of Crime and even offered a fascinating origin story for what made the Joker into the madman he became. I was twelve years old at the time and was completely caught off guard by the savage interpretation of the character and how casually he paralyzed Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl only to use pictures of her suffering to try and drive her father Commissioner Gordon over the edge into madness as well. The point the Joker is trying to make in this story is that we’re all just one bad day away from slipping into total insanity, a fact that Batman may or may not be able to refute even if he manages to catch the Joker and lock him up again. From what I see in the trailer below it appears as if director Sam Liu has made a faithful adaptation, even using some famous panels from the original comic in the film. With Bruce Timm involved as producer, we can count on a very solid movie, perhaps even a great one, but what has me most excited is the return of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill to play Batman and the Joker. The DC animated universe is just not the same without them. So I hope you enjoy the trailer and for my part I eagerly look forward to seeing the movie when it premieres in July at San Diego Comic Con.
